Shirley started knitting as a small child and knit her first pair of argyle socks in seventh grade. She soon began designing socks and sweaters. Her professional knitting career began in 1971 teaching adult education and later for TKGA, TNNA and others. She has owned a yarn shop and since 1988, a mail order business, Bay Country Boutique and the subscription newsletter, Knitting News. During the holiday season, her designs appear at Tanglewood Festival of Lights Gift Shop in Clemmons, NC. Shirley's designs sell at The Great Train Robbery Emporium, Banner Elk, NC. She writes, designs and tech edits for yarn companies, knitting magazines and books. She teaches monthly courses for Senior Scholars at Appalachian State University.
